Rutabaga/Swede

Although swedes can also be harvested in mid-summer, it is usually grown as a succession crop and is a typical winter vegetable because it stores well. This cruciferous vegetable is also called Swedish turnip or rutabaga and is closely related to turnips. Today the swede is valued as a valuable winter vegetable with a wide range of uses in the kitchen.

Swedes are an undemanding and easily cultivated crop. With enough moisture, they grow on practically any soil. For storage, swedes are grown in the second half of the year. Regular watering and hoeing helps to keep the beets from becoming tough and woody. Crop netting or fleece helps against pests such as cabbage white and flea beetles.
