Pumpkins/squashes

Squashes are among the oldest cultivated plants in the world. Technically, this fruit vegetable from the squash family is a berry. With over 850 varieties, squashes come in a variety of colors, shapes, and flavors. Their versatility in the kitchen, suitability for storage and generous yield make squashes a very popular vegetable.

Cover young plants with fleece on cool nights when temperatures dip below 10°C. Fertilize generously with compost and ensure sufficient water supply. By pre-cultivating squashes in pots, they can be harvested earlier. The use of mulch fleece protects and warms the soil. Sow directly with once the soil is warm enough, usually from mid-May onwards. Pinching out the main shoot after the 6th leaf promotes the formation of the squashes. The fruits are ripe as soon as the stalk becomes woody and has dried off. Store in a dry place at 8-10°C.
