Spinach

Spinach is a no-fuss leafy green that provides fresh greenery to the kitchen all year round. Like other members of the goosefoot family, it is rarely attacked by pests and diseases. Spinach grows quickly and is well suited as a gap filler, pre-crop or succession crop and as edible green manure. Thanks to hardy varieties, it can also be harvested in the cold season.

Loose and moist soil is important for germination. Spinach can also be grown in balcony pots without any problems. However, it often gets too hot for spinach on balconies during the summer. Spinach also grows in partial shade. The soil should never dry out and it should be protected from weeds. To protect it against birds, it is worth covering the seed with fleece or sowing in a polytunnel. Do not fertilize spinach too much to avoid nitrate accumulation. Do not sow too densely to harvest whole rosettes.

Amsterdams Reuzenblad (First Harvest) - Spinach

Fast-growing variety for very late outdoor cultivation, as well as very early growing outdoors, or under cover. Sow from mid August to mid September, and end December to beginning of February.

Variety is quick to grow and late to bolt. Deep green in colour. Very robust and resitant to mildew.

Variety is slow growing, and hence slow to bolt, too. Leaves smooth, round and dark. Particularly suited for summer picking. Resistant against spinach mildew of the strains 1 + 2, tolerates 3.

Leaf vegetable which was widely grown in Europe prior to the introduction of spinach. Tasty and flavoursome. Leaves can be continually harvested. Grows a bit faster than the red variety, and is slower to bolt, too.

Medium-green, fast-growing selection of the Winter Giant lamb's lettuce (corn salad) variety, particularly suited for cultivation over winter and in spring. For sowing in late summer, as well as in March and April.
