Carrots

Orange carrots are the most commonly found in our gardens. But this umbelliferous plant has an interesting variety of colors and shapes. Growing a mixture of white, yellow, orange, violet or multicolored varieties provides variety in the vegetable garden and more color on the table.

Carrots are an important organic vegetable and many organic breeders are constantly working on improving quality and yield. As a result, promising new organic varieties have emerged in recent years. Carrot breeding is also very important at Sativa. When selecting new variants, special attention is paid to robustness, yield and appearance. Good taste is also crucial of course, Sativa carrots should be sweet, aromatic, crunchy and fresh.

The numerous carrot varieties are best divided according to their growth times. Early varieties are particularly suitable for bundling and immediate consumption. Medium-early varieties can be eaten immediately but can also be stored for a few months. Late varieties are mainly grown by commercial growers for processing.

Avoid growing on soil freshly treated with organic fertilizer because of carrot flies. Carrots prefer deep, humus-rich and well-drained soil. Since they germinate slowly, the plots should be weeded well before sowing. Make a seed furrow 2-3cm deep and plant approx. 2 seeds per cm. After a few weeks, the seedlings can be thinned out to about one every 2-3 cm.
