Radish (small)

From round to oblong shapes, red to white colors – crunchy and spicy spring radishes are an ideal snack and taste wonderful, especially in mixed salads. Spring radishes are very closely related to moolis but are a relatively new crop in their own right. They are members of the cruciferous family of plants. No other vegetable can be harvested as quickly as the spring radish. The seeds germinate quickly and the small tubers can be harvested after just 6 weeks.

Spring radishes are robust and can be sown directly outdoors or in balcony boxes from spring to autumn. Balcony boxes can, however, quickly become too hot for them in summer. Once ripe, radishes should be harvested quickly so that they do not become woody. An even supply of water is important so that the tubers remain mild in taste and do not burst. Regular hoeing, watering and covering with fleece helps protect against flea beetles which damage the leaves.
