Insect and bee friendly varieties

Insects are a central part of our food production and indispensable for ecological balance. However, bee and bumblebee species have had massive problems in foraging for food in recent decades. Part of the reason for this is the dwindling proportion of wildflower meadows and flower-filled fallow land in today’s cultivated landscape. Flowering green areas in our gardens can make an important contribution here.

Alfalfa - Green manure

Perennial, valuable green manure and fodder plant. Particularly deep rooting. Fixes nitrogen and opens up soil for following crops. Grows even in dry conditions. Great for insects, too.

Angelica - Angelica archangelica

Medicinal plant that is ideal as a specimen perennial. The two-year-old plant grows to the height of a person and smells pleasantly aromatic. Great for bees and other insects. Due to slow germination patience is required. Direct sowing in summer works best.
