Insect and bee friendly varieties

Insects are a central part of our food production and indispensable for ecological balance. However, bee and bumblebee species have had massive problems in foraging for food in recent decades. Part of the reason for this is the dwindling proportion of wildflower meadows and flower-filled fallow land in today’s cultivated landscape. Flowering green areas in our gardens can make an important contribution here.

Lavatera - Lavatera trimestris

Will grow into multi-branched shrubs with pretty pink-red mallow flowers. Grows quickly to 1 m in height. Staggered sowing possible.

Lavender - Lavandula angustifolia

Echinacea, medicinal and ornamental plant, ca 20-50 cm in height; flowers are blue-violett and very fragrant either fresh or when dried.

Lebanese Oregano 'Babilye' - Herbs

Variety of oregano discovered in Lebanon. Use as the main ingredient of Za'atar or as an aromatic herb. High in essential oils, especially thymol and tastes slightly sharper than thyme. Not frost hardy, needs protection in winter.

Perennial plant for tea and medicinal use. Pleasant fresh aroma helps deter flies. Sowing in seed trays and transplanting in small bunches is recommended.

This pink-coloured bee balm can grow to 80 cm tall. Its long flowering period and edible, lemon-flavoured leaves make it a highly attractive garden plant. Prefers sun or partial shade. Leaves and flowers can be used for a refreshing tea.

Low cover plant with bright pink to scarlet-coloured flowers. Height ca. 10-25 cm. Suitable for sunny and dry locations. The flowers are particularly attractive for butterflies.

Fragrant signet marigold that bloom for several months. Bushy, growing up to 40cm high. The small, lemon-yellow flowers can be used to enhance desserts and drinks or added to potpourris.

Meadow Clary - Salvia pratensis

Plant is approx. 50-60 cm in height, with bright dark blue flowers. Does well in dry meadows, but also in field borders and in less-deep soils. Comparatively undemanding.

Subspecies of yarrow, which originally occurs in dry locations in southern Europe and is mainly a pharmaceutical plant. Pre-cultivate individual plants or small clumps. Spreads via runners.

A well-known garden plant since the 16th century. Flowers in white and in a range of shades of blue. The decorative seed heads are extremely suitable for dry arrangements. Fragrant seeds. Height ca. 40-50 cm.
