Tomato today are our most important vegetable by volume. But in Switzerland, tomatoes have only been cultivated commercially since World War I. Originally tomatoes came from Central and South America. They were already cultivated by the Incas and Aztecs. Christopher Columbus introduced them to Spain. At first, tomatoes were considered as ornamental plants. They were only discovered as a food plant until much later. The original coloration of tomatoes is yellow.
