Annual flowers

Many of our flower species were brought to Europe by plant collectors from the 17th century onwards. Initially they were grown for research in botanical gardens and from there often entered our gardens. Annual flowers are short-lived plants. In the year of sowing they flower, form seeds and die. With some species, sowing at different times can result in continuous flowering.

Marigold 'von Eriswil' - Tagetes tenuifolia

Delicate, yellow-orange flat-ish flowers, height 30-40 cm. Tagetes are well-suited for mixed planting and to plant in between crops, as they are effective against nematodes.

Marigold mix yellow - Annual flowers

Calendula mix with flower colors ranging from light yellow to dark yellow, as well as unusual disk florets in some varieties. The flowers reach a diameter of 6–8 cm. Height, depending on planting density, 50-70 cm.

Mexican Sunflower 'Torch' - Tithonia rotundifolia

Tithonia diversifolia, annual, vigorous flower for summer, bright orange flowers, which will last until the first frost. If fed well it will reach 1.5 metres in height with a spread of one metre.

Reseda odorata, annual decorative plant, inconspicuous flowers. 25 - 60 cm in height, whose beauty becomes only visible close up. Famous for its enchanting fragrance.

Nasturtium - Tropaeolum majus odor.

For summer. Creeping and climbing habit. Simple flowers of yellow and orange hues. Should not be fed much, as otherwise too much foliage will be the result.

Nigella damascena - Nigella damascena

A well-known garden plant since the 16th century. Flowers in white and in a range of shades of blue. The decorative seed heads are extremely suitable for dry arrangements. Fragrant seeds. Height ca. 40-50 cm.

Calendula officinalis. Medicinal and decorative. Semi-full orange flowers. Good as a cut flower. Approx. 50 cm high. In traditional medicine recommended to treat injuries.

A now rare wild plant with beautiful white umbels and large marginal leaves that look like a white cloud. Good for dried bouquets. Sets seed well.

Papaver somniferum, heritage variety from Freibergen. Easily self-seeds. Used to be grown for its oil content, but nowadays only for decorative purposes.

Papaver rhoeas, common poppy in a wide range of colours. Flowers vary from all-white to deep red. Can reach 80 cm in height.

Rudbeckia - Rudbeckia hirta

Rudbeckia originates from North America and is well suited for cutting and drying. For the former it is best to wait until the stem has fully hardened.

Summer flower, ca. 60 cm in high, small pink flowers. The significantly larger, pink bracts have a greater decorative value. In flower for a long period.

Low snapdragon that convinces with attractive dark, filigree foliage and velvet red flowers. 30-40 cm high. Suitable for both borders and pots. Old variety, originally from England.

Cleome, decorative plant with large attractive flower spikes. Pink, purple and white flowers last into autumn. Particularly useful for sunny locations with rich soil. As solitary plant or for cutting.

Summer flower for cutting and drying. Colourful mixture. Approx. 80 - 100 cm tall, potentially higher in some locations. To dry, hang budding or flowering stems upside-down in a safe place.

Sunflower 'Hella' - Helianthus annuus

Dark yellow, brown-centred sunflower, ideal for cutting. The plants grow up to 1 m tall and form multiple branches with numerous 10 cm-wide heads. Long, very straight side shoots with good vase life.

Single flower open-pollinated sunflower variety with gold-yellow petals and a dark centre. Height varies with time of sowing. As a result of good pollen production, excellent for pollinators.

Thanks to its branched growth, the attractive light yellow flowers with their dark centers appear for several months. The plants reach a height of 1 m to 1.5 m and are therefore suitable for smaller gardens or for pots.

Variety with multiple branches and simple flowers which range in a wide spectrum of browns and yellows. Staggered sowing will produce extended flowering periods. Depending on when sown, grows up to 2 metres in height.

Sweet Pea - Lathyrus odoratus

A profusion of flowers in white, pink, purple with a strong fragrance, too. Excellent for cutting. Will climb up poles and fences. Direct sowing recommended, as well as dead-heading.

Tagetes 'Ehrenlegion' - Tagetes patula nana

Traditional, ground-hugging Marigold. Single flowers which are very attractive to insects. Will happily flower all summer long.
