Europeans brought back phaseolus beans to Europe following the discovery of South America. Originally all beans were climbers. Varieties growing as bushes have been known since the 16th and 17th centuries. Worldwide, beans are an important source of dietary protein. Though dried beans play a much bigger role than green garden beans.
